The Stag and his Reflection

Description

Another piece from last year, based on the Aesop fable of the same name. It was for a competition deadline (the Hermione Hammond Drawing Award, in which it got an Honourable Mention, so that's something!)

The fable:
The proud stag admires his antlers in his reflection, and laments his thin legs. Unbeknown to him a lion is stalking ever nearer. Suddenly it leaps out. Off charges the stag, his legs carrying him far from the reach of the lion. He heads for the forest, believing he will outwit the lion amongst the trees. But, alas, his antlers are snared in the branches! 'Woe is me, my thin legs have carried me fast to safety, but it is my antlers that have doomed me!' And that was the end for the proud stag.

Graphite pencil on A3 paper.
